Composition and Production
Polyethylene (PE) is a thermoplastic polymer comprised of long chains of ethylene monomers linked by stable carbon-carbon bonds. The simplicity of its structure—each repeating unit of the chain is a combination of carbon and hydrogen—lends PE its unique properties, such as flexibility, chemical resistance, and durability.
Variations in the density and branching of the polymer chain lead to different types of PE, each with specific characteristics. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has a linear structure with minimal branching, resulting in stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength. In contrast, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) includes significant branching, which gives it less tensile strength but greater flexibility.
The production of PE bags begins with the extraction of raw materials, primarily natural gas and crude oil. From these, ethylene is produced via a process called ‘cracking.' Following this, polymerization occurs where ethylene monomers are catalyzed under high pressure (for LDPE) or low pressure (for HDPE) to form the polymer chains.
The production of PE bags is energy-intensive, primarily due to the high temperatures and pressures required for ethylene polymerization. Energy sources, often fossil fuels, directly influence PE's carbon footprint. Emissions include CO2 and other greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming and other environmental impacts.
However, HDPE is produced using slurry, solution, or gas phase processes, which involve lower pressures and temperatures than LDPE processes. This results in a denser, more rigid material suitable for bags requiring higher strength and stiffness.
LDPE is processed using autoclave or tubular processes. These processes involve high pressure and temperatures to achieve polymerization, creating the branched, soft, and flexible characteristics ideal for consumer bags that need to accommodate irregular shapes and weights.

Style
We stock film for two types of Poly Bags: LAY FLAT and GUSSETED.
LAY FLAT are made from seamless tubing, with the opening at the top of the bag and a bottom seal. Lay flat bags are a great for packaging bulk foods, keeping products clean and storing items such as nuts and bolts.
GUSSETED bags have side pleats that expand with a bottom seal. These bags are excellent for items that are thicker, bulky or irregular shaped that need depth.
Size
The width is the measurement across the opening of the bag.
The length measures from the bag opening to the bottom.
The thickness of the bag material is measured in millimeters.
Gusseted bags have an additional depth measurement of the expanded opening.
Polyethylene bags and film widths range from 2.5″ up to 40″ x 39″ wide

Thickness
We offer clear poly bags in a variety of thicknesses. Lightweight poly bags at a 1.25 mil thickness are ideal for small and delicate items. Medium weight bags are appropriate for food packaging and slightly heavier small items. For sharp products and even liquids, our 4 to 6 mil thickness poly bags can safely hold tools, screws, mulch, and other gardening and industrial goods.
